(Meredith) – Deputies said 4-year-old girl awoke to gunshots and found her mother, father and grandfather dead in their California home.
According to the Amador County Sheriff’s Office, the young girl called her grandmother early Thursday and said her dad, 26-year-old Jacob Jedidiah Thayer, had shot himself. When the grandmother arrived at the home and found three bodies, she called 911.
Deputies said Thayer fatally shot his girlfriend, 27-year-old Marie Leonetti, and his father, 60-year-old Richard Thayer II, before turning the gun on himself.
Investigators believe the victims were shot multiple times in the apparent murder-suicide. A partially loaded Glock .40 caliber pistol registered to Jacob Thayer was found next to him, the sheriff’s office said.
The 4-year-old girl, who used her slain grandfather’s phone to call for help, was not injured. Deputies said the grandmother was not present during the shooting because she had left the home to care for another relative, the Sacramento Bee reports
A motive remains unclear, as the sheriff’s office continues to investigate.
