A father from Terryville is battling a potentially deadly disease, but his family still has hope.

David Ray and his family said they're dealing with a very difficult situation. He was diagnosed with end stage liver disease.

Their community is rallying around them, but David Ray said he has dealt with hardship before. That's what keeps him fighting.

Most days, you can find him at home spending time with his boys.

"It's funny you never think you're listening but they're always listening," David Ray said. "They pick up on things and they watch you do things."

His wife, Kristin Ray, said he is the perfect role model to their 11-year-old son Jamie and 9-year-old son Noah.

"He's loving, he teaches them how to be little men," Kristin Ray said.

David Ray has had his challenges over the years. His father passed away in a motorcycle wreck and he had a fatty liver, which he said contributed to his gain of 100 pounds.

"Hearing that news was devastating to me but at the same time I was like I gotta be better than this," David Ray said. "And I can't just lay down and take this."

So David Ray set to work to lose the weight. In less than a year, he dropped 130 pounds.

His health issues, however, were not over.

Three months ago, he was diagnosed with end stage liver disease.

He could die if he doesn't receive a transplant.

"It's kind of like Russian roulette right," he said. "You don't know."

David Ray wanted his boys to know that he faced challenges before and he intended to do it again.

He launched a website, started to raise money and is doing everything he can to find a donor.

He said he's been touched by people's generosity.

"It's just amazing," David Ray said. "It really makes you find humanity in the world."

However, Jamie Ray said that doesn't mean the journey's always easy.

"Whenever my mom tells somebody all the people are always crying." Jamie Ray said. "I always think 'come on don't cry.' Hopefully someone can donate he can be ok."

Despite David Ray's situation, he hasn't stopped being a role model for his children.
