(Meredith) – Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for NBA superstar LeBron James to replace Betsy DeVos as education secretary.

As of Friday morning, the Care2 petition has garnered more than 24,000 signatures -- nearing its goal of 25,000.

"Betsy DeVos was hired without ever setting foot in a public school," the petition claims, "and she's taken every opportunity to work against the interests of the children, teachers, and families she has pledged to serve."

Meanwhile, the petition called James an “inspiration to kids all over the country.”

“He's shown he cares about America's youth and understands the power of public education in helping children meet their true potential,” the petition reads.

The three-time NBA champion recently opened his I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Retiring his new Lakers jersey to become education secretary, however, is unlikely -- especially given the testy relationship between him and President Donald Trump.

On Saturday, Trump blasted James after he deemed Trump divisive in a sit-down interview with CNN anchor Don Lemon.

The president tweeted: "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do."

In the CNN interview, James said he "would never sit across" from Trump, though he would talk to former President Barack Obama. James' publicist declined to respond to Trump's tweet.
